The City of Minneapolis is hiring for Police Support Technician I positions! We currently have one position open in our Transcription Unit, and one position open in our Records Information Unit.

Within the Transcription Unit, the PST I will perform clerical and technical work for the Minneapolis Police Department in support of the criminal justice system. This position requires entering and transcribing data from hard copy materials, telephone, recordings, and in-person sources.

Within the Records Information Unit, the PST I will support the Minneapolis Police Department personnel by performing duties via computer databases and/or maintaining complex data base systems. This position will include processing a wide-variety of managed data and technical typed query-based requests.

Work Schedules:
Minneapolis Police Transcription Unit requires flexibility to work various schedules which includes overtime, weekends, and holidays. The current shift is 7:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.

Minneapolis Police Records Information Unit requires flexibility to work various schedules which includes overtime, weekends, and holidays. While weekday shifts generally start as early as 7:30 a.m., the weekend and holiday shifts start at 6:00 a.m.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

(Includes but not limited to)

  • Enter and retrieve a variety of law enforcement data into/from various computer programs, from handwritten or printed documents, telephone, recorded, and in-person sources. This includes transcribing long interviews from recorded sources.
  • Maintain and update legal document information.
  • Validate police reports (names, addresses, vehicles, businesses), including researching and/or confirming information as necessary.
  • Type letters, memos and/or other correspondence.
  • File legal and other documents appropriately.
  • Sort and distribute U.S. Mail and inter-office mail.
  • Answer telephones and resolve customer issues, including referring and/or transferring customers to appropriate source.
  • Generate case numbers for other units as requested.
  • Respond to internal and external police department inquiries in-person, by telephone, fax, e-mail and written correspondence.
  • Prepare required paperwork for administrative Judicial Review as well as investigators.
  • Receive, redact, file and disseminate law enforcement data in accordance with the MN Data Practices Act, local and federal laws, as well as Police Department policies and procedures.
  • Convert audio files, create CDs from audio files, and e-mail audio files as requested by authorized personnel.
  • Process suspense files from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
  • Maintain logs of work activities.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of private and confidential data.
  • Attend City sponsored trainings in a variety of job related functions and required City and Police Department training.
  • Provide prompt, professional and courteous customer service to the general public, as well as offer support to City of Minneapolis employees from other units/departments and also a variety of governmental agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: Office Environment

Required Qualifications:

Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or GED.

Minimum Experience:
Two years clerical experience that includes data entry, typing, filing, answer telephone calls and customer service.

Desired Qualifications:
Prior experience with law enforcement data. Prior transcription experience from recorded sources is highly desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:
Become FBI CJIS Security Training (security awareness training) certified.
Become State of MN BCA certified to process suspense files.

Equivalency Statement:
An equivalent combination of education and highly related experience in a similar environment may be considered.

Background Check:
The City has determined that a thorough Police Department background check / investigation, criminal background check, and/or qualifications check may be necessary for positions with this job title. Applicants will be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.

Drug and Alcohol Testing:
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Selection Process:
The selection process will consist of the following steps: a) evaluation of minimum qualifications, (b) computer-based tests consisting of typing and comprehension tests, and (c) department interview. It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.

There are 11 questions in the online application. Applicants are encouraged to answer the questions to the best of their ability and to include this experience in their online application. Applicants who fail to answer the supplemental questions may not be considered.

Interview Selection:
The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate's education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.

Eligible List Statement:
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire six months after it has been established.
